I have found there are three sides to gossip.
#1 – We have told someone something in confidence, needing a safe place, only to find that this person wasn’t safe after all.
#2 – We are supposed to be the safe person, but instead of keeping this information in our hearts, we tell the next person because it’s just too interesting to keep to ourselves.
#3 – We are the other person, we heard some information about someone.. Now we too, are passing this gossip along to the next person. They follow suit and do the same.
Here’s the scoop on gossip.
Gossip is viscous and dangerous. Not just to the victim but to ourselves. Here are a few reasons:
- It’s destructive to our minds.
- It destroys our witness.
- It’s creating a gap in your relationship with Christ.
Maybe you have an addiction to spreading that confidence. Does knowing you have the scoop on someone cause you to go against the leading of the Holy Spirit and tell others?
Here are some Scriptures to help you. In your handwriting, write them on index cards, tuck them away in your purse, post them on your walls, lay them by the phone, put them in your prayer journal, make them your screen saver.
DO WHAT IT TAKES! Break this cycle of sin in your life.
Begin to pray these Scriptures over your life today:
Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (NKJV)
Proverbs 8:6-8 “Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, and from the opening of my lips will come right things; for my mouth will speak truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse in them.” (NKJV)
When we become obedient to the Lord’s Words, we find that our spirits are lighter and we find joy in seeking the things of Christ.
Proverbs 3:21-26 “My child, do not lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the Lord is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.” (NLT)
Do what it takes to live stronger in Christ Jesus. Let go of those things that hindered you in the past. It’s time for us to strive for maturity and live the lives that we have been called to!
God’s Word= Transformation
