- I’m not equipped or skilled enough to do that!
- The ‘in’ crowd never wants to invite me in.
- I’m not bold enough or have an outgoing personality.
- My marriage will never look like hers.
- If I had the finances, I would be able to…
- Why do I feel so unwanted in my own family?
- Why don’t my kids look like theirs? (education, athletic abilities, personalities..)
These statements above are some of my own as well as some of yours. Over the last few months I have read your emails and spoken with many of you over these ‘voices’ in our heads. Only 7 of the most popular are listed but we could add hundreds, maybe even thousands more.
As I said in one of our video blogs; Satan has the uncanny ability to bring up every hurtful word spoken to us, every rejection we’ve received, all those times we wished we had so and so’s personality or our lack of finances for that home or wardrobe. The echoes from those voices sometimes cause us to shrink back from the things that the Lord has called us to. We become withdrawn from our church, friends, marriages, children, and possible relationships we could be enjoying. Worst of all.. it keeps us from the relationship with Christ that He is so eager to have with us.
So what do we do with all of these voices in our heads? How do we plow ahead through insecurities, bits of bitterness, fear of rejection, or the want for more?
Colossians 3:12 tells us something we can trust, believe and walk out:
12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Everyday, I walk into my closet and choose what outfit I will wear for the day. I must also choose to clothe my heart with things like compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. However, in order for me to do that, I must invest in my relationship with Christ. Only He can give me the desire for these things in my life.
I am finding I have a stubborn streak. It gets me into some trouble. How about you? Do you ever feel like, “Well, what’s the use in even trying? It’s too hard! I don’t have time to study and pray like that!”? We often let discouragement speak louder than God’s Word. It will take some work, but with daily prayer, surrounding yourself with Scripture and by using Scripture to fight the battles for you, like Paul instructs us in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Those thoughts are the voices in our heads. Do you want to live the life that Christ has called you to? Do you long to be the Jesus girl that is so full of Him, with a life is clothed in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience? I know girls.. Me too! Let us take captive today the voices (thoughts and arguments) that set us up against the knowledge of God. Join me in taking those voices and thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ by the power of His Word.
Till next time!
